WHAT MAKES A WELL-MADE HAT?

It’s all in the details.

A great hat can look effortless.

But behind that effortless look are a lot of decisions — about materials, construction, proportion, finishes and the people who make it.

At love Kate, we believe good design starts with good materials and ends with something you genuinely want to wear.

A great hat needs to wear many hats.

Start with the material

A well-made hat begins with the right material for the job.

Raffia for a sunny day.

Wheatstraw for structure.

Natural fibres chosen for their character, performance and feel.

Materials that aren't simply good to look at, but good to live with.

Look at the construction

The way a hat is made matters.

A handwoven hat should have a considered, even weave. A structured hat should hold its shape.

Edges should be finished neatly. Trims should feel intentional rather than simply added on.

Notice the finishing

Look at the little things.

The stitching should be neat.
The band well fastened.
The trim — the icing on the cake.
And the inside? Just as thoughtfully finished as the outside.

The little details matter.
They’re what turn a good hat into a great one.

Check the shape

A well-made hat should have a shape that feels deliberate.

The crown and brim should work together. The proportions should feel right. And, most importantly, the hat should sit comfortably on your head.

Good design isn't about making something complicated.

It's about getting the details right.

And then there's the workmanship

Materials matter.

Design matters.

But so does the person making it.

At love Kate, we work with makers we know and trust. People who pay close attention to how our hats are made.

Some of our hats are handwoven. Some have details added by hand here in Melbourne.

And finally...

Do you want to wear it?

Not once.

But again and again.

For the beach.
For the boat.
For a long lunch.
For travelling.
For the school run.
For a windy walk.
For traipsing the tarmac.
For when you'd like to stand a little taller.

A little love Kate tip

Look closely. The good stuff is in the details.

Good design. Great materials. Better mood.
