HOW TO WEAR A HAT

HOW TO WEAR A HAT

There are no rules. Just a few things worth knowing.

A hat can change an outfit in seconds.

Sometimes that's the whole point.

But if you're wondering how to make a hat feel like you, rather than like you're wearing a hat because someone told you to, here are a few things worth knowing.

Start with the shape

Different hats suit different faces, hairstyles and occasions.

Try a few.

Look at the proportions.

A wider brim can feel relaxed and glamorous. A smaller brim can feel neat and understated. A structured crown creates a different look again.

There isn't one right answer.

The right hat is the one you like on you.

Although all hats should make you stand a little taller.

Get the fit right

A hat should feel comfortable and secure without being tight.

It should sit naturally on your head rather than perch on top or disappear down over your eyes.

If you can move your head comfortably without constantly adjusting it, you're onto something.

Try the angle

This is where a little experimentation goes a long way.

Wear your hat straight.

Then tilt it slightly.

Try it with the brim level. Try it with one side a little higher.

Look in the mirror.

Throw your hat in the ring.

Think about the occasion

A beautiful hat doesn't always need a beautiful occasion.

Wear one to the beach.

On a boat.

To a long lunch.

Travelling.

Walking the dog.

To the races.

Strolling the top end of town.

Or simply when the sun is shining and you feel like it.

Sometimes looking rather more glamorous than the occasion requires is exactly the right call.

And then there's confidence

This might be the most important bit.

Don't spend the day wondering whether you're “a hat person”.

If you like the hat, wear the hat.

You'll get used to it.

And, before long, it will feel like yours.

A little love Kate tip

Put it on. Look in the mirror. Adjust if necessary. Then forget about it.

The best hat is the one you stop thinking about — you've got this. Enjoy your day.
