HOW TO PACK A HAT FOR TRAVEL

Because, like you, a good hat deserves to go places.

A good hat is, more often than not, an essential travel companion.

But before you start packing, check that your particular hat is designed to be packed. Some hats are made to travel beautifully. Others are structured and prefer to travel on your head — or in a hat box.

So, if your hat is packable, here's how to give your hat the best chance of arriving looking as good as you do.

1. Fill the crown

Place soft clothing inside the crown of the hat to help support its shape.

Small things work particularly well — socks, underwear, swimwear or a soft T-shirt.

Think soft. Think supportive. Think no sharp corners.

2. Lay it flat

Place the hat crown-up, with the brim flat on the bottom of your suitcase.

This keeps the weight of the case away from the crown and allows the clothing inside it to help protect its shape.

3. Pack around it

Now pack your clothes gently around the hat.

The aim is to cushion, not squash.

Fill the space around the hat so it doesn't move around during your travels, but don't cram the case so tightly that you're putting pressure on the brim or crown.

4. Keep heavier items away

Shoes, toiletries and anything else that could put pressure on your hat should stay away from it.

If your hat isn't designed to be packed...

Don't.

A structured hat may be much happier travelling on your head, in a hat box or in another protective container.

A little love Kate tip

If in doubt, carry it.
By the brim, NOT by the crown.
